Comment on Do You Even History? by Robert

A very good example of forgetting or remaining silent about specific facts, is the populist UK’s Widdecombe’s speech in EU parliament (2019) regarding Brexit. A speech that doesn’t respect history. Not only by remaining silent, but even by making up a past that never was. Which becomes dangerous if used by politicians to make up a future that never will be. Something populists do. Populist demagogues do without history. That populists find supporters is the best proof that education failed and that history seems to be a lost object that they seem not to be missing. Not good for the future.

Comment on Socrates, the Educator of Tyrants by Ovidiu

He was commanded to do it because :
“the Thirty summoned me to the Hall, along with four others, and ordered us to bring Leon from Salamis, that he might be executed. They gave many other orders to many people, in order to implicate as many as possible in their [i.e., the Thirty’s] guilt.”
He did not cooperate in what he understood it was a veiled, implicit, request that he – a well known moral figure, authority, in the city- approves their act.
Open defiance would have given them a simple, clear-cut, reason to execute him right then and there for blank disobedience but here at stake was something else. That is, the Thirty were doing a wrongful act, they well knew that, and they were hesitant and uneasy enough about doing it that they felt the need to look for the approval and support of at least some respected citizens.
Socrates wasn’t suicidal but neither was he willing to do wrong rather than have wrong done to him.

Some of your observations are absolutely brilliant — and the touches of humor add much, as well! I will definitely read more of your work. I also reviewed “A Moveable Feast” on my book blog last year if you want to compare notes: https://regarp.com/2017/08/26/review-of-a-moveable-feast-the-restored-edition-by-ernest-hemingway/ ]

Comment on A Moveable Feast Ernest Hemingway by Jessica

Sun, 01 Dec 2013 04:01:48 +0000http://1000wordsabout.com/?p=83#comment-31I have not read Farewell to Arms or For Whom The Bell Tolls, but I have read Old Man and the Sea and can understand the harsh dose of reality that Hemingway administers. Hemingway absolutely doesn’t romanticize me the way Fitzgerald has so many times. However, that is the beauty of the two brilliant writers, they are completely different in style, choice of characters, and symbolism. And yet, they are clearly best friends. They share something that many will never understand or experience. The kind of closeness that allow the other to feel comfortable even in the most vulnerable of positions. Love means being able to be at your most vulnerable without feeling exposed, instead you feel alive and free.
